I teach courses and supervise theses in the realm of political communication and journalism, in particular about ‘new media’ topics. Next to that, I teach methods courses – both “traditional” ones and on automated content analysis, programming and Big Data.

Important information for students who consider taking the course Big Data and Automated Content Analysis
If you want to find out whether this course is something for you, you can have a look at materials used earlier. The (old) course manual gives an overview of the course, but I also put all slides on slideshare. You can also find all teaching materials and exercises used last time here. Of course, there will be some changes next year, but the general structure remains the same.
A really good way to learn the basics of programming in Python (we will do our analyses in Python in the course) is taking the free online course at codecademy, which only takes a few hours.
If you have any further questions about the course, send me an email at d.c.trilling@uva.nl or contact me on Twitter (@damian0604).
Please also have a look at the Computational Social Science section of my website.
If you are a student doing an empirical research project (e.g., for your master thesis), you might want to have a look at these slides on how to manage your data (PDF, in Dutch).
If you are unsure about how to report empirical results in a paper or thesis, have a look at this manual by our department (PDF, in Dutch; PDF, in English).
